Top 5 Summerslam matches.

SUMMERSLAM is rapidly approaching, this time I will be live with my good friend @siteofshite to watch it in the comfort of his conservatory and you can follow us on twitter with the hashtag #DSCSlam, you can also follow me on twitter @bigboss010 too. As re roll into the biggest party of the summer I wanted to have a look back at some of the previous Summerslam PPV events and try to track down my top 5 favourite matches. This was actually harder than I thought it would be, considering its one of the big 4 PPV events of the WWE year there have been some right shite Summerslams and matches to go with them. I have managed to travel through though and have found my personal favourite matches, now these aren’t the “Best” matches so to speak, these are just my personal favourite matches..

My choices and as usual they are in no particular order:

1.       Summerslam 1988
Mega Bucks vs. Mega Powers (Brother) – Tag Team Match
C’mon I had to go with this match, 4 of the biggest names in WWE ever in the main event tag match of the 1st Summerlsam PPV, we had Miss Elizabeth in the corner of the Mega Powers and then Virgil & Bobby Hennan in the corner of the Mega Bucks, then to throw more into the mix we had Jesse Ventura as the guest referee which added a new level to the match. The coming together of the Mega Powers was fantastic, who thought that Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan could pool their might to fend off the combination of Ted Dibiase and Andre the Giant (Mega Bucks), ok both were short lived teams but were still larger than life. Also to mention the wonderful ref distraction from Miss Elizabeth who ripped her skirt off to distract the ref to give the Mega Powers recovery time to double team Dibiase to get the win and what a sight that was, she was pretty freaking hot!

2.       Summerslam 2013 – The Best vs The Beast (NO DQ match)
CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar (With Paul Heyman)
What a match, it was destined to be a good match, the story had aligned itself brilliantly with Punk’s face turn and Heyman turning on Punk, then bringing back Lesnar to take Punk down. The match itself was very good with both guys getting some great offence in and had a great match, both guys showcasing what makes them so good. This isn’t the last time Lesnar nor Punk will feature in this list either, think this goes to show how good both these guys are. With Heyman’s constant interference Lesnar prevailed here and got a pinfall victory over CM Punk but this match was simply the beginning of the Paul Heyman vs. CM Punk storyline and what a start.

3.       Summerslam 1998 – Ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship
The Rock vs. Triple H
This was the first Summerslam PPV encounter for these two guys and when they were both really picking up steam as the leaders of the two main factions in the company, The Nation of Domination and D-X. Both would also go on to main event PPVs just a year later, rightfully so after giving performances like this match. The IC title has always been viewed as the work horse title; the belt that attracts the good workers and usually delivers some good matches, this match was no exception. Mark Henry and Chyna were at ringside for their respective partners and this only added to the feel of the match because the crowd knew that at some point they would get involved, which of course happens and Chyna’s interference actually allows HHH to climb the ladder to beat the Rock for the IC title.

4.       Summerslam 2011 – WWE title match
John Cena vs. CM Punk
Punk beat Cena just a month before for the title and then quickly “left” the company, this lead to a tournament for the WWE title which Cena sadly ended up defeating the actual winner which was Rey Mysterio on the night he won the title to regain the belt, this then lead to the return of CM Punk to claim his place as the true WWE champion in a similar fashion to HBK with the IC title years earlier. This of course lead to this match, it was a good match, was it better than the match from the previous PPV? No! By no means but it still holds up in comparison as a good match between the two biggest names in the company at that time. Punk of course beat Cena to become the undisuputed champion, only to lose it moments later as Alberto Del Rio cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to get a title shot. The only issue I had with this match was that the build for it was really rushed, Punk walked out with the belt but was back but a few weeks later, they could have easily built this match over months, Punk had been hitting social media pretty hard with his pictures of the belt and had turned up to random shows with it, he could have done this for months before turning back up. I felt this was a good storyline cut short, so Cena could face the Rock at the following years Wrestlemania.

5.       Summerslam 2002 – WWE Undisputed championship match
Brock Lesnar (With Paul Heyman) Vs. The Rock
Without a doubt from of my favourite matches full stop, never mind just Summerslam matches and I feel this deserved to be on this list. Brock was new, he was fresh and he was an epic attraction especially with Heyman as his mouth piece. However The Rock was slowly bowing out to focus more on his acting career and the crowd did not like that, so where The Rock should have been cheered and Lesnar should have been booed, it didn’t go down that way, in fact it was the opposite. Lesnar looked great against the Rock and his victory was well earned and the Rock made Lesnar look great which is to his credit. The build was good with Lesnar winning the King of the Ring to get the title shot and then dominating Hulk Hogan like no one had ever done before to defend his title shot leading into the Summerslam match. The actual match itself was very hard hitting and had some great spots one of my personal favourites being the “Brock Bottom” part of the match which was absolutely awesome. Brock of course became the youngest WWE champion of all time by winning this match after an F5 to the Rock.

So thats my Top 5 Summerslam matches, if you have any thoughts please leave a comment and let us know your favourite matches. J.

TNA in trouble, who should WWE sign?

With the recent news of Spike TV’s intent to cancel TNA: Impact Wrestling on their network should they not reach a new agreement, the future of TNA is now up in the air, causing some stir I would imagine throughout the entire wrestling community as to what will happen to all the TNA wrestlers should they close their doors for good. Well I figured I would have a quick whiz through their current roster and think about who WWE would be or should be interested in looking into hiring or maybe giving some sort of deal too should the roster of TNA suddenly become free agents. I also brought in my friend 12ve-Pac from the SOS to throw his 2 cents in the mix as well, it’s good to have friends!!

From me first I think and in no particular order of course:

1.       Bully Ray / D’von (Team 3D / Dudley Boyz)
Now for a couple of reasons I have included both of these guys as 1 choice because I think they should come as a team, even if they don’t get used as a team on TV or maybe not even used on TV at all. Both have enough experience between them to get involved in the actual business side of things in WWE and could be used on and off screen to enhance up and coming talent. Bully Ray could even be given a run as a Face or Heel with his persona evolving as much as it has, however D’Von sadly I do see as more training and development.

2.       Gail Kim
Now I always thought Gail Kim was one of the better female wrestlers in WWE and TNA, so would be great to see her go against the likes of AJ or Paige in good divas matches, I believe her resigning would do wonders for the Divas division to give it just a little boost and would have to be a top choice by WWE with regards to the TNA knockouts.

3.       Samoa Joe
Well this was an obvious choice, he is a big atheletic guy who has years of expierence and with some classic matches under his belt with guys like Kurt Angle, Christopher Daniels and AJ Styles, I think it’s a good idea to hire him. Given a bigger platform to perform on he may become one of the bigger stars in the company, WWE already tried a similar gimmick with Umaga and even more recently with Rusev, so why not use Samoa Joe for his advantages over them.

4.       Bobby Roode
An obvious choice, with how far he has come from his beginnings in Team Canada to teaming with James Storm to form Beer Money Inc, then into Fourtune and then his solo run ending in a world title reign. I would like to see him come in and I think could be a solid mid carder with dips into the upper card for the WWE, if they also signed on James Storm they could easily reform Beer Money Inc to reinvigorate the tag division.

5.       Kurt Angle
If Angle could pass the medical he would be so valuble not only as an in ring talent but also as a backstage influence, his experience and sheer talent would no doubt go a long way in helping the new crop of WWE developmental talent. I fear is in ring value would be lower as i would think that aspect of his career is nearing an end, with so many injuries going back so long it makes sense to come back to WWE in a more backstage / training role and who better than Kurt Angle for that.

Now onto my SOS cohort for his look into the TNA roster. J

12VE-PAC’s
With TNA on the ropes financially that does not make good reading for the company's top talents. With the news that WWE is fast loosing money and letting talent go themselves, they may need to fill some gaps in the roster. So here are my top 5 potential WWE signings from TNA, should they want to pay out!

1) The biggest name in the TNA lockeroom at the moment is Kurt Angle, so he has to be on the list. It's been no secret that the feelings between WWE and Kurt have been... Well... Stretched over the past few years when Kurt left WWE. With TNA on a financial shoestring it may be them that pulls the first blow on this deal. Kurt has a lot of injuries but he has still performed at the highest level in TNA. Question is would WWE take the chance of him re injuring himself as a performer in the ring? Probably not but, I would love to see him in a WWE ring again.

2) This couldn't be a top 5 without a potential diva or two :) so my next draft pick is going to be Velvet Sky. A good, consistent performer in the ring at TNA and could add to the competition in the currently, lack lustre diva's division. She has a good look and can actually wrestle, which is something else that is missing from the current women's division, apart from a handful of the girls in the WWE. I would absolutely love to see a red hot divas division again and this could be the key! One of the main reasons I think WWE is loosing money is due to lack of different content and I have made it clear in my video predictions (YouTube.com/siteofshite) that this needs to change to peak my interest in WWE again.

3) It's no secret that Vincent Kennedy McMahon loves big men! Lol, couldn't resist that opening for my next pick :) Abyss is an athletic big man who has a very serviceable look for the WWE. Get rid of The Pants Khali and replace him with someone who could pose a threat to anyone in the WWE World Heavyweight title picture. Abyss could work a great match with any of the top superstars, become part of the authority and make a very intimidating tag team with Kane, or equally become the new enforcer as Kane's time in the ring draws to a close. He would simply be a great signing.

4) This leads nicely onto my 4th pick for the draft, Samoa Joe. Yes it's another "big guy" but, Samoa Joe can go in the ring. He is more athletic than most guys smaller than him plus he has the submission angle which, only a handful of WWE superstars have at the moment! He could make the mid card serviceable in his twilight years in the ring, or pose a threat in the top tier of the company. This makes him a workable, utility talent which at this moment is sorely needed to fill spaces on a packed card of PPV's.

5) This list would not be complex without Canadian talent. So Bobby Roode is going to complete my list of TNA talent with the potential to do well in the WWE. Although he has had a brief stint with the company already it was nothing to write home about. In 2003 he went through a series of matches not winning a single one. The times have changed and Bobby Roode has the superstar pedigree to be the face of the company at some point. He could have some wonderful matches with Randy Orton for examples as their styles in the ring would complement each other very well. He has the potential to be the next Triple H style character, a role fit for this man and he could play it to the letter.

So they are my top picks for the potential talent that WWE could pick up in a future TNA firesale and that finishes my long overdue contribution to our annual SummerSlam article in association with The Big Boss @bigboss010 also check out Mike Air and myself on Twitter @siteofshite and on our YouTube channel of the same name for PPV prediction videos as we reach our second birthday.
