Top 5 Summerslam matches.

SUMMERSLAM is rapidly approaching, this time I will be live with my good friend @siteofshite to watch it in the comfort of his conservatory and you can follow us on twitter with the hashtag #DSCSlam, you can also follow me on twitter @bigboss010 too. As re roll into the biggest party of the summer I wanted to have a look back at some of the previous Summerslam PPV events and try to track down my top 5 favourite matches. This was actually harder than I thought it would be, considering its one of the big 4 PPV events of the WWE year there have been some right shite Summerslams and matches to go with them. I have managed to travel through though and have found my personal favourite matches, now these aren’t the “Best” matches so to speak, these are just my personal favourite matches..

My choices and as usual they are in no particular order:

1.       Summerslam 1988
Mega Bucks vs. Mega Powers (Brother) – Tag Team Match
C’mon I had to go with this match, 4 of the biggest names in WWE ever in the main event tag match of the 1st Summerlsam PPV, we had Miss Elizabeth in the corner of the Mega Powers and then Virgil & Bobby Hennan in the corner of the Mega Bucks, then to throw more into the mix we had Jesse Ventura as the guest referee which added a new level to the match. The coming together of the Mega Powers was fantastic, who thought that Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan could pool their might to fend off the combination of Ted Dibiase and Andre the Giant (Mega Bucks), ok both were short lived teams but were still larger than life. Also to mention the wonderful ref distraction from Miss Elizabeth who ripped her skirt off to distract the ref to give the Mega Powers recovery time to double team Dibiase to get the win and what a sight that was, she was pretty freaking hot!

2.       Summerslam 2013 – The Best vs The Beast (NO DQ match)
CM Punk vs. Brock Lesnar (With Paul Heyman)
What a match, it was destined to be a good match, the story had aligned itself brilliantly with Punk’s face turn and Heyman turning on Punk, then bringing back Lesnar to take Punk down. The match itself was very good with both guys getting some great offence in and had a great match, both guys showcasing what makes them so good. This isn’t the last time Lesnar nor Punk will feature in this list either, think this goes to show how good both these guys are. With Heyman’s constant interference Lesnar prevailed here and got a pinfall victory over CM Punk but this match was simply the beginning of the Paul Heyman vs. CM Punk storyline and what a start.

3.       Summerslam 1998 – Ladder match for the Intercontinental Championship
The Rock vs. Triple H
This was the first Summerslam PPV encounter for these two guys and when they were both really picking up steam as the leaders of the two main factions in the company, The Nation of Domination and D-X. Both would also go on to main event PPVs just a year later, rightfully so after giving performances like this match. The IC title has always been viewed as the work horse title; the belt that attracts the good workers and usually delivers some good matches, this match was no exception. Mark Henry and Chyna were at ringside for their respective partners and this only added to the feel of the match because the crowd knew that at some point they would get involved, which of course happens and Chyna’s interference actually allows HHH to climb the ladder to beat the Rock for the IC title.

4.       Summerslam 2011 – WWE title match
John Cena vs. CM Punk
Punk beat Cena just a month before for the title and then quickly “left” the company, this lead to a tournament for the WWE title which Cena sadly ended up defeating the actual winner which was Rey Mysterio on the night he won the title to regain the belt, this then lead to the return of CM Punk to claim his place as the true WWE champion in a similar fashion to HBK with the IC title years earlier. This of course lead to this match, it was a good match, was it better than the match from the previous PPV? No! By no means but it still holds up in comparison as a good match between the two biggest names in the company at that time. Punk of course beat Cena to become the undisuputed champion, only to lose it moments later as Alberto Del Rio cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to get a title shot. The only issue I had with this match was that the build for it was really rushed, Punk walked out with the belt but was back but a few weeks later, they could have easily built this match over months, Punk had been hitting social media pretty hard with his pictures of the belt and had turned up to random shows with it, he could have done this for months before turning back up. I felt this was a good storyline cut short, so Cena could face the Rock at the following years Wrestlemania.

5.       Summerslam 2002 – WWE Undisputed championship match
Brock Lesnar (With Paul Heyman) Vs. The Rock
Without a doubt from of my favourite matches full stop, never mind just Summerslam matches and I feel this deserved to be on this list. Brock was new, he was fresh and he was an epic attraction especially with Heyman as his mouth piece. However The Rock was slowly bowing out to focus more on his acting career and the crowd did not like that, so where The Rock should have been cheered and Lesnar should have been booed, it didn’t go down that way, in fact it was the opposite. Lesnar looked great against the Rock and his victory was well earned and the Rock made Lesnar look great which is to his credit. The build was good with Lesnar winning the King of the Ring to get the title shot and then dominating Hulk Hogan like no one had ever done before to defend his title shot leading into the Summerslam match. The actual match itself was very hard hitting and had some great spots one of my personal favourites being the “Brock Bottom” part of the match which was absolutely awesome. Brock of course became the youngest WWE champion of all time by winning this match after an F5 to the Rock.

So thats my Top 5 Summerslam matches, if you have any thoughts please leave a comment and let us know your favourite matches. J.

I’ve been Big Boss and I’m out.... Peace.
