Favourite Wrestlemania Matches

With Wrestlemania 30 looming I thought it would be fun to have a think about my personal favourite Wrestlemania matches, not what I thought were the top 5 best matches, just my personal favourites. Then this idea sparked up asking my cohort 12VE-PAC from over at SOS to get involved and send me his personal favourite matches to go with them. These matches are in no particular order and are all in good fun.

Big Boss’s Favourite Wrestlemania Matches.

1.       WWE Title Match - The Rock vs Stone Cold Steve Austin at Wrestlemania 17
This match takes the #1 spot for me as this match was the main event of the first Wrestlemania I watched when I first got into wrestling properly back in the summer of 2000. This match also started Stone Cold’s heel turn, which brought about one of my favourite tag teams ever, the Two Man Power Trip with Triple H and this was one of my favourite times in wrestling history. That slam dunks this match as my #1.

2.       World Heavyweight Championship - The Undertaker Vs. Batista at Wrestlemania 23
This was an awesome match; Batista had been on a roll, winning back the World Heavyweight Title after he forfeited it due to injury. Was a fantastic match and added a new level of toughness to Batista having never really faced someone like the Deadman and certainly not at the level of Wrestlemania.

3.       Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 21
What a match, the best wrestler in the world vs. the best sports entertainer in the world, this match was just fantastic and both guys gave one hell of a performance. I think as a straight wrestling match is probably one of the best ever at a Wrestlemania show, can’t fault it from my stand point.

4.       Streak Vs. Career – The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 26
The 2nd encounter between these two giants in pro wrestling, this time HBK’s career was on the line and despite probably not being as good a match as their first encounter this match had more depth and story to it. Plus the “SUPER TOMBSTONE” to finish the match also bumps it up in my humble opinion.

5.       Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock at Wrestlemania 18
This match gets in on the list for simply being the 1st major ICON Vs. ICON match long before The Rock vs. John Cena. This match was the real main event of Wrestlemania 18 and without a doubt wasn’t the most technical match but certainly told the story that needed to be told.

HONORABLE MENTIONS
1.       Batista vs. John Cena at Wrestlemania 26
2.       Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 19
3.       Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania 19
4.       Mickie James vs. Trish Stratus at Wrestlemania 22 ;-)

12VE-PAC’s Favourite Wrestlemania Matches.
Wrestlemania 3 - Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant

Over 90,000 fans filled the Pontiac Silverdome in Detroit while others packed arenas to watch the match on closed-circuit television. It also involved a moment on commentary that has not been matched yet in terms of a matches participants and hype "The irresistible force versus the immovable object!". This was the first truly epic match in Wrestlemania’s long and illustrious history and the true birth of Hulkamania 'Brother'.

Wrestlemania 8 - Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Bret 'Hitman' Heart

Remember the Intercontinental title? No! Well it still exists believe it or not and there was a time when it had matches at Pay Per View matches of great magnitude. This match definitely has to be on any Wrestlemania playlist because the match is just awesome. The build, the psychology, the near heel turn and of course Bobby the brain and Gorilla Monsoon. A pure wrestling classic from two of the best, but the finish was an absolute classic. How many times have you seen a sleeper hold reversed into a pin? Watch this match it may be the first and only time you see it.

Wrestlemania 18 - The Rock vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan

This one has a special meaning to me. It involved my childhood favourite WWF superstar and one of my favourites from my teens in The Rock. The match was by no means a wrestling classic but my goodness I marked out and still do even now seeing these two go head to head. Hogan (heel) got cheered and Rock (face) got booed. However it was the stare-down where both men looked left and right that had to be one of the coolest moments in WWE history.

I don't know of anyone who won't remember this match, which is why it made the list.

Wrestlemania 24 - Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels

Since January of the year 2008 Ric Flair had been living each match like it was his last in part to Vince McMahon's stipulation that the next match Flair lost would end his career. Step in Mr. Wrestlemania to give Flair the send off he deserved. Easily the best match on the show that year besides the Money in the Bank Ladder match. The match went back and forth until Shawn pulled the trigger on Old Yella'! A very sad moment for the world of wrestling, until he turned out for TNA, but a fitting end to a golden career.

Wrestlemania 10 - Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels (Ladder Match)

The second of two intercontinental title matches on my list. This is the match that is thought to be the godfather of modern ladder matches, raising the bar higher than it had ever been, this match is truly awesome in every way. First of all the set up is classic... literally as what I am about to say may surprise a few people.

Shawn was on his second run as IC Champ when, it became apparent that... Wait for it... Shawn hadn't defended the title within the 30 day time limit 'cough' Dean Ambrose 'cough' and so Shawn was stripped of the title. Razor Ramon aka Scott Hall, won the title and Shawn returned with a duplicate title, claiming to be the real champ. The only way to settle this was to hang both titles above the ring and so the modern ladder match was born.

The definition of a spot fest, these two used the ladder to full effect, with the crowning spotlight on Shawn Micheals as he dropped his tights and splashed Razor from the top of the ladder. Ultimately this is what led to Razor's win and being crowned undisputed IC Champ. Paving the way for Money in the Bank, TLC and multiple tag team ladder matches, which followed suit in years to come.
